The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors endorsed the preferred alternative as supported by the Executive Steering Committee, authorized a Comprehensive Plan amendment to consider the recommendations from the Route 1 Multimodal Alternations Analysis, and directed staff to proceed with an Environmental Assessment. The next phase of this effort has been named “Embark Richmond Highway,” and primarily involves the update to the County’s Comprehensive Plan to support the implementation of Phases I and II of the preferred transit alternative.   


Governor Terry McAuliffe has proclaimed September as National Preparedness Month in Virginia and he encourages business owners, families and communities to be ready for emergencies. “September has historically been the most active time of the year for hurricanes in Virginia,” Governor McAuliffe said. “Whether it’s a natural disaster like a hurricane or a human-caused emergency like terrorism, individuals, families and businesses that take the time to prepare are more resilient in the long run than those who failed to plan.”


The full Ad Hoc Commission has 3 meetings left. On September 14, the Commission will meet at Walt Whitman Middle School in Alexandria to hear public testimony for the second time. There is no need to sign up in advance in order to speak. The other two meeting dates are August 17 and September 28


Virginia’s existing three tax holidays – back to school in August, hurricane and emergency preparedness in May, and Energy Star and WaterSense in October – were combined into a single event by the 2015 General Assembly. The new combined sales tax holiday this year is Friday, Aug. 7, through Sunday, Aug. 9.

During the holiday, shoppers won’t be charged state and local sales tax on a variety of items. The tax-exempt products have various price limits, but there is no restriction on how many exempt items consumers can purchase....
